The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation was worth roughly $30 billion
malaria and other deadly diseases than many countries can afford to. the
billions, but they chose to be involved in the fight against poverty and
disease.
Bono is another example of a rich person doing more than he has to.
He spends more time in Africa than most people realize. He was involved
with the start up of DATA (Dept Aids Trade Africa), (RED), and the ONE
Campaign. He partnered with people like Bill Gates and Michael Dell (DELL
computers) and many other business leaders to make a difference through
financial support. These specific campaigns against AIDS, poverty, abuse,
etc. would not be there if Bono wasn’t willing to give.
He knows how influential he is and uses that as a leverage to commit world
leaders to help fight against poverty and disease. Let’s be honest, how
many other lead singers have used their “celebrity” status to actively make a
difference. Through the years he has been in talks with anyone from
Nelson Mandela to George Bush, and many other state leaders to commit
their governments to support, with great success. Again, he doesn’t have
to do anything to make a positive difference in this world. He can just as
well just live the life of a rock star and never get his hands dirty, like many
of the “here today, gone tomorrow” music stars do.
The lesson here is simple. If you want to receive something, you have to
give it first. Whether it is money, friendliness, or love. The more you give,
the more you get. So unclench your fist and open your hands, for doing so
will enable you to receive. The greatest thing however is not the receiving
part, but the giving part. It will give you much more joy to see when you’
re actually making a difference in someone’s life. Obviously not everyone
is a Buffet or a Bono, but you can start somewhere.
If nothing else, give to your church and they will put the money to good
use. There are however many worthy charities out there that will welcome
any donation you can make. So get involved and start giving, and if you
really, really cannot afford a financial contribution, give your time. It is just
as important, if not more important than money.
