Step 5 - Educate Yourself

STEP 5 – EDUCATE YOURSELF
Before we continue, let’s quickly recap. First you had to dream and
visualize your future. Then you learned about getting the right attitude in
order to be successful. Then you had to figure out what you’re passionate
about. Then you learned where to look for opportunities and how to create
new ones. Now we’ll take a look at the importance of subject specific
knowledge.
So if you did your homework, you’re supposed to have two pages full of
ideas broken into categories. What you need to do now is to decide which
opportunity suits you best and learn as much as possible about it. Why are
successful people successful again? It’s because they are knowledgeable in
a specific field. They understand their businesses.
Just to be clear, your main action should not be to quit your job, but to
educate yourself in whatever it is you really want to do while you still have
your job.
You’re probably thinking where to get time to do this; especially the
“educate yourself” part. Don’t worry, there is always time. Let’s be
honest, nobody has “more” time than anybody else to do whatever it is that
make successful people successful. We all have only 24 hours in a day.
Bill Gates and Warren Buffet (the two richest people in the world) also only
have 24 hours in a day just like the teacher or the pharmacist or the
cashier. It’s how you spend those 24 hours a day that makes the
difference. If you spend your evenings in front of the TV, doing nothing
else, you can't expect things to change for the better. Somewhere you need
to change something. Somewhere you’re going to have to make some time
to do something to turn your dreams into reality.
There is simply no substitution for subject specific knowledge. Become an
expert in your field. Be the go to person. Do you think the average Realtor
knows more about real estate than Donald Trump? Of course not.
How about Tiger Woods, do you think the average golfer knows more
about golf than Tiger? Absolutely not. How about the band U2, do you
think the average musician out there knows more about the structure of a
song or the psychology behind mass hysteria, than Bono? You get the
point. I deliberately pointed out the best known personalities in their various
fields of expertise to give you someone to identify with. Just like
