Step 2 - Shape Your Attitude
Is it really even possible to be successful in anything if all you can think
about is failure?  And when you experience failure, what do you do with
that?  Do you regress to the fetal position and quit or do you reload and take
aim again?  Failure is part of the learning process.  When you do everything
right, you don't learn anything.  But when you fail or make a mistake, that’s
when you learn.  So don't be scared to fail, embrace it.   How many times
will a baby try to walk before he/she gives up and stop trying?  Never, of
course.  They'll keep on trying 'till they walk.
With every failed attempt learning takes place, and that is key to success.
Remember when you tried to ride a bicycle for the first time.  Could you do
it the first time?  How about the second time?  How many failed attempts
did you have before you finally were able to keep your balance and ride a
few yards?  The point is you were unsuccessful plenty of times before you
tasted success.  You made mistakes, you fell and you got hurt.  But you got
back up, dusted yourself and you tried again.  So the question is why didn't
you give up?  Why did you get back on the bicycle?
The answer is twofold yet simple.  First reason: something drove you.  You
had an urge to be able to ride a bicycle.  Maybe it's because all your friends
also had bicycles and you didn't want to be left out, or maybe it's because
you were the only one in your neighborhood with a bicycle and wanted to
show off.  Whatever the reason might be, it kept you to it.

The second reason: you were not so self-conscious about failure.
You were not afraid of what everybody around you was thinking of you.
The reality is that in the grownup world everybody wants to be successful,
but on the first try.  If things don't work out, we don't want to try again.
It's easier to just shove it out of public eye and forget about it in the hope
that everybody else would also just pretend it never happened.
Only successful people know that success usually comes after many,
many, many attempts.  The secret though is, knowing how to fail.
You should never put yourself in a position where you would not be able to
recover from failure.  In other words, you should set up your failure in
such a fashion, that you could "dust yourself" and do it again, this time just
a little differently.  Think of the Wright brothers and their attempts to fly.
Did they master it the very first try?  Nope.  Did they fall?  Yes.  Now the
question is how do you crash an airplane and live to tell the tale and try
again?  The answer is yet again a simple one.  You make sure that you "fall"
on a flat grassy area instead of falling down a mountain with sharp rock
edges.  The lesson here is simple.  Chances are you will fail at
